What is "Enough"?
"Enough" is Personal
Enough
My coach said this to me recently…
“The obsession with growth assumes everyone is not enough.” - David Stegman
…I find myself pondering this.
As someone who is nearly continuously seeking growth, it gave me pause. Took me back to some of the BIG questions:
“What is enough?”
“When is it enough?”
“When am I enough?”
I wonder if the answers might be: me, now, and never.
“You are loved just for being who you are, just for existing. You don’t have to do anything to earn it.” — Ram Dass
Never Enough is Enough, for Some
On a coaching call this week, with a dear friend that I have known for 30 years, we were talking about what enough looks like for him.
He kind of stumbled onto an answer that he had not clearly stated before, using a movie quote…
“The perfect blossom is a rare thing. You could spend your life looking for one, and it would not be a wasted life.” - The Last Samurai
His “enough” is never. It’s always more. It’s always getting better.
There will always be another language, another programing code, another project, another move in jujitsu, another recipe. He will never be done. And that excites him, fills him.
It was eye opening for me, my enough is very different.
Enough is Enough, for Others
“You don’t have to earn your enoughness. Growth is allowed, not required.” -GPT
From many coaching discussions, there’s a common thread of receiving accolades for “doing things”, accomplishing, from the time we were young, was praised.
Because of this external validation and the near continual moving of the “goal posts”, enough may feel like its always on the horizon. Saving $X dollars, the next car, the next relationship…
Many are so consumed (consciously or not) with the “doing”, the getting of accolades, the achieving, they may have forgotten they are also pretty awesome for simply “being”. Being Human.
Optimistically, I see people waking up to the reality that they are enough and/or they choose what enough is.
Enough, just as they are.
It’s empowering to embrace that your enoughness.
Enough is Your Decision
In sum, you get to choose.
It’s your life, your show. Your enough.
What is enough* for you?
