Great, Great, or Great!
These are your choices.
We Don’t Know
I find myself (and many friends of comparable vintage) contending with some significant, big life, choices.
At the same time, I am present to, and grateful for, the opportunity to contend with such things.
On a call with the Coach this week, we talked about the fact that we simply do not have enough information (yet). Yet.
I (we) do not know how things will work out.
I (we) are not supposed to know.
Hilariously, as I am busy analyzing all the angles and over thinking things, a part of me thinks I should have answers. That I should know.
And while experience can be helpful, mine and others I consult, the only thing I am sure about is no one knows.
We never know how it will go.
Piercing the Fantasy
The gift of recognizing that we don’t know is that it removes the fantasy of looking for the perfect choice or the great outcome.
With that perspective, every “reasonable” choice is a great choice.
What I do know is that I will be there, in the future, to deal with the choices I make.
Ideally I will make good choices that have great outcomes.
If I don’t, I will be there to clean up the mess and make new choices.
The Hard Part: While Making the Decision
A while back, I posted my favorite quotes of all time.
The great and powerful Debbie Millman hit the list with this gem:
“Hard decisions are only hard when you’re in the process of making them.” - Debbie Millman
(Aside: this came up in her first interview with Tim Ferris back in 2017. Remains one of the best conversations I have ever listened to. LINK)
Millman’s wisdom builds on how great our choices are and most importantly to just make a choice.
Then move on with life.
