Big Life? Big Problems!
The only people without problems - are Dead
Problems Mean We Are Alive
During a 4-day, virtual Tony Robbins extravaganza, the concept of problems came up a few times.
A few notes are here:
Early in the weekend Robbins quotes a mentor of his:
“The only people without problems are in cemeteries. If you don’t have problems, get on your knees and pray.” Vincent Peale,
A concept that I agree with yet seem to forget about when I have a few, big, problems on the go.
Being able to reframe our challenges has the potential to shift the energy spent on them and potentially make dealing with problems more enjoyable, maybe even motivating.
Disappointment Panda
Re-reading “Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck” by Mark Manson (highly recommended), early in the book he talks about a superhero called Disappointment Panda.
“Disappointment Panda would be the hero that none of us would want but all of us would need. He’d be the proverbial vegetables to our mental diet of junk food.” Mark Manson, The Subtle Art of Not Giving A fuck
Disappointment Panda would show up in our lives and tell us harsh truths about ourselves that we need to hear but don’t want to accept.
Perhaps the biggest one is this…
…the problems never cease…they just improve.
“Don’t hope for a life with no problems,” the Panda said. “There’s no such thing. Instead, hope for a life full of good problems.”
Happiness Comes from Solving Problems
…this is how we get better, it’s how we improve our lives.
Once you finally make the money to buy the car you have coveted then you get more problems like paying more insurance, maybe premium gas, maybe you need new sunglasses and driving gloves!
Once you decide to leave that comfortable career path for the thing your heart calls you towards…all kinds of big problems get created. Money, status, what to tell people, will it work?!
And if you can keep solving these problems, and feeling the happiness and satisfaction that may be produced…you may get closer to True Happiness
“True happiness occurs only when you find the problems you enjoy having and enjoy solving.” Mark Manson
